Whereas Mediterranean countries such as Italy, Portugal and Greece regard bidets as a firmly established and indispensable fixture, only a very small number of people in the US have a bidet in their own bathroom. Bidets always seem to get people talking, since a lot of people aren't familiar with their purpose and most people are pretty unsure about how this "low-standing sink" is supposed to be used.
While it is true that having a bidet in your own bathroom takes up some space, it also ensures much better hygiene after use of the toilet. All of our elegant bathroom ceramics will blend into the overall concept of your bathroom design with style. Going with Duravit products allows you to choose from among a huge range of high-quality designs.
What Is a Bidet?
A bidet is a low washbasin that looks a bit like a toilet, and traditionally serves as a simple way to take care of personal hygiene after using the toilet. Because of their practical shape, bidets are sometimes used incorrectly - and sometimes they are used for washing feet or for freshening up. They can also be accessed by children who are not yet big enough to reach the sink. Using the water that comes out of the bidet faucet, personal hygiene after using the toilet is both thorough and gentle at the same time. Modern bidets have a bidet shower so you don't have to use your hands while cleaning yourself.
There are three different construction methods: The floor-standing bidet, the wall-mounted bidet and Duravit's compact version:
Floor-standing bidets:
These are a practical solution when the drain pipe connection is in the floor. The Duravit ME bidet by Starck, by our star designer Philippe Starck, is an iconic example of this.
This type of bidet makes an ideal complement to wall-hung toilets. They make cleaning the floor easier thanks to their floating design. They are attached to an in-wall bidet system and they are a perfect solution in smaller bathrooms.
This space-saving bidet version is aptly named "Compact" since it doesn't project as far out into the room and it was designed specifically for tight spaces. This version means you don't have to forgo personal hygiene after using the toilet, even in small bathrooms.
In order for the toilet and bidet to form a single visual unit in your bathroom, we recommend matching the bidet to the toilet and choosing both fixtures from the same brand - and even from the same series. Duravit offers a matching bidet in the same design for practically every toilet.
What Are the Advantages of a Bidet?
A bidet provides a number of conveniences. It gently and mildly cleans your private areas with water. Rinsing with pure water prevents sensitive areas from developing sores and fissures, which can be caused by friction from using toilet paper. Water is also much more hygienic than toilet paper, which only removes the coarsest particles and can leave residues behind in small folds of skin. These can be removed by using the rear-wash. That's why bidets are also ideal for people with sensitive skin or those who suffer from hemorrhoids. The hygienic shower also minimizes the risk of developing dermatitis, since toilet paper is not free of germs.
Bidets are not only more hygienic than using toilet paper, they are also more environmentally friendly. Although a little more water is used, the amount of toilet paper needed is drastically reduced because it is only used for drying. You can even use a hand towel instead in order to skip using toilet paper altogether. Producing toilet paper requires a lot of energy and uses up valuable resources. Once you've experienced the benefits of using a bidet, you won't want to go without one.
How Do You Use a Bidet Correctly?
In principle, using a bidet is very simple and becomes even easier once you develop a routine:
1. After using the toilet, you can either sit on the bidet, position yourself above it, or crouch and hover so the bidet shower can be used to gently clean the area.
2. It doesn't matter whether you sit on the bidet seat facing the wall or the other way around.
3. Depending on your preference, you can either fill the bidet basin with water or use the bidet showerhead, which lets you direct the stream of water precisely and easily thanks to the spherical joints. The decision about whether to clean the area manually or using a soft washcloth varies from person to person.
4. Soap should not be used when cleaning this area because this skin is especially sensitive and is easily irritated. Special personal hygiene products can be used however; these help to maintain the flora in private areas and are free of chemical additives.
5. And the last step is to use a towel or some toilet paper to dry yourself.
Tip: Is your bathroom too small for an extra bidet? A shower toilet is an all-in-one solution that is doesn't take up much space and provides a wide range of features. A distinction is made here between a bidet toilet attachment and a toilet with a bidet function as a complete system.
