Beach life, Nordic style. Luxury in the countryside is always associated with Laissez-faire. The Hotel Molskroen, to the east of Arhus on the Baltic coast, is no exception. The gentle landscape is just the way the ice age left it. Molskroen is the prototype of a Danish country hotel and has found numerous imitators. It was built in 1921 using a rural blend of thatch, timber and stone. Architect Egil Fischer took his inspiration from the British Isles, where they led the world in rural architecture back in the 1920s. Because it can sometimes be rather cold and rough on the Baltic coast, terracotta tiling and the famous vanity unit in the Philippe Starck bathrooms remind one of warmer climes further south.
