Functionalism at its best. A Prague Spring: andel's Hotel strikes a modern note in the living architectural museum that is the city's charming Malá Strana (Lesser Quarter or, more literally, "Small Side"). In the period before the "Velvet Revolution" it was virtually forgotten that, in the 1930s, Czech architects were regarded as the masters of functional architecture in Europe. And now the next generation but one is picking up where they left off. Clear division of space – the suites are constructed almost as small houses, some over two storeys, within the hotel. Instead of the white modernity of the 1930s there is now lots of wood for the new and extended parts of the building – a skilful blend of the contemporary and the traditional.
