The good old days. There was a time when Singapore's Raffles Hotel was regarded as the epitome of international luxury in the Far East. Times change quickly. A new generation of stylish hotels is springing up across the booming Asian continent. The St. Regis in Pudong, Shanghai's business district, is one of them. It combines an oriental extravagance in the design of its restaurants, rooms and suites with stylistic influences from the heyday of western empires. Somerset Maugham and his contemporaries might have enjoyed staying here – and would certainly have approved of the suite bathrooms in their favoured Anglo-American style.
