Welcome to the furnished bathroom!
Highlights of the international design scene were once again to be seen this year at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan. The fair broke all records as over 348,000 visitors crowded into the exhibition centre on the outskirts of the city and the various exhibitions and showrooms throughout Milan from
16 to 21 April. The “bathroom” attracted particular interest this year and observers noted that this room is clearly no longer an afterthought for the Interior Design scene but rather an important focus in its own right. Bathroom manufacturer Duravit, which attended the world’s largest design show for the first time, communicated its vision of modern bathroom furnishing and design.
Bathrooms are currently in a period of transition. Today people expect more from them than the traditional bathing, washing, showering or cleaning their teeth. The bathroom is becoming a living space that offers a refuge from the complex world that we live in today. But this can be achieved only with a holistic concept that includes and brings together all the conceivable aspects of the bathroom. A pleasant and harmonious atmosphere is called for with the right mix of elegant designer products, select materials, light, colour and versatile features. Altogether, the bathroom has become no less complex than any other room in the home. Welcome to the furnished bathroom! In practical terms, Choice wood tones carried over from other rooms in the home imbue natural warmth. They also act as linking elements and endow the room with its own special character: the washbasins have a furniture trim, the shower tray has matching wood panelling and the panelled bathtub becomes an item of furniture in its own right with drawers, shelves or trays. Light and colour, which have such an important influence on our sense of wellbeing, used to be an afterthought in the bathroom, where we start and end the day.
High time for the latest lighting and electronic technology, which make it possible to create a changing light experience – from sunny yellow and soothing red to mysterious blue or the colours of the rainbow in an alternating pattern. The room is bathed in light and colour, providing the ideal setting for spa products such as whirltubs or multifunctional showers. An increasing number of people want to enjoy the healing and energising hotel experience in the privacy of their own homes. At home, the completely private and intimate atmosphere simply adds to the spa effect.
The central focus of this refuge is the user, whose senses are stimulated by the visual and physical experience, whose senses are stimulated by the visual and physical experience, which creates an ambience of wellbeing and offers the opportunity to relax mind and body completely from the noise, stress and pressure of daily life – in harmonious surroundings that directly address the senses and convey a feeling of emotional sanctuary.
The perfect retreat for an encounter with the fundamental element of water, which makes up 80 per cent of our body and is so essential for our life processes. Man has always been fascinated by the secrets of water: with its transparency, perpetual motion and rapid flow, it repeatedly defies all attempts to classify it rationally. New phenomena and capabilities are being continuously discovered. For example, the artist Alexander Lauterwasser illustrates water’s properties as a sound box and its ability to respond to certain vibrations. . This is just one indication of the reason why this element – and hence the room where water is most at home – are so important to us. Furnished as a refuge, the bathroom reveals itself to us as a place of peace and stillness that promotes inner balance, a place where we can embrace and dwell awhile on our true selves.
